Guts by Gary Paulsen
Guts is a novel of the True Stories Behind Hatchet and the Brian Books is a non-fiction book series by Gary Paulsen, published on January 23, 2001. The book consists of true stories and experiences of Gary Paulsen's life adventures, including dog sledding in blizzards, being in a plane stalling in the air in the arctic, watching as a little boy gets stabbed to death by a young buck, and eating bugs. He discusses the inspirations of his life and what he loves to do and the way his experiences have helped to create events and scenes for the character Brian Robeson in his Brian's Saga series.
When Paulsen was a child his parents were poor and did not have enough money for food and school supplies, so he was forced to worked at a younger age if he wanted to have food and supplies to go to school. He started to work as a pinsetter in a bowling alley for money and to get food he hunted around town for rabbits, ducks, and grouse as his main food supply. He also worked as an EMT volunteers in a 1000 square mile radius, and helping people with emergencies like heart attacks and plane crashes. He tells of how he was attacked by a moose not just once but several times. He also shares how he once was stranded while on a trip for work because his canoe flipped. He shares a story about men who go out alone in the wilderness and die, not of attacks but malnutrition because they did not know what they were doing and that they were unprepared.
Overall I loved reading this book again. I love how Gary Paulsen used these real experiences in life to write the Brian books. How he shared all his encounters in nature doing what he loved to do, that's why I read it because I have he same personal interests as Paulsen. I give this book a 4.5/5 and would recommend it to those who love the outdoors.
